Chef Dennis Barber got his first taste of the restaurant business while attending college in Hammond, LA. One of the grand historic homes in town was being renovated as a fine dining restaurant. The place was charming and offered an exceptional dining experience in the small town 50 miles north of New Orleans. Dennis grew up in New Orleans and was thrilled to see a restaurant of this caliber in his college town. The memory of dining experiences there stayed with him and he decided that one day he might like to try his hand at something similar. After ten years of service in the US Air Force as a B-52 radar navigator/bombardier, Dennis returned to his hometown of New Orleans and began culinary training at The Westin Canal Place. After 25 years of working for the Westin and other fine establishments, Chef Dennis was presented with the perfect opportunity for realizing his dream. He began renovating a service station off Hayesville’s historic square in 2005 and opened The Copper Door in March 2007.

We’re always amazed at how folks find their way here to our little corner of the mountains, and Chef Sid and Nina are no exception. In 1985 Chef Sid and Nina met in Paris, France while taking her junior year of college abroad. They married in 1988 and began their life together in Naples, Florida. They have two beautiful daughters, Alexa and Sarina. In 2005, the family relocated to this beautiful mountain area where Chef Sid served as Executive Chef at Brasstown Valley Resort & Spa until November 2014. After a few years in our old roadside location, we are happy to now offer fine-dining surrounded by the stunning vistas of Cane Creek Vineyards, working and serving our community together.

Paris & Company for Great Take-out Meals

quiche

Paris & Company is the one of the best places for great take-out meals in the Hayesville area! I had read about Paris & Company in several local papers and saw their page on Facebook,
but never really understood what it was all about.  But I’ve been house-sitting in the Young Harris area and decided to seek them out and see what the chatter is all about.
And boy oh boy I am glad I did!

Here’s what others have said about Paris & Company…

“As my husband and I were waiting for a tow in the hot Georgia sun, this lovely owner Nina, who was working on catering a private party, gave us a delicious pasta dish, mini eclairs and cream puffs as we waited. What a lovely person to be so kind and generous. What a treasure to find in Young Harris….Excellent food with a French flair!! We sat on a bench outside as her restaurant was closed and had the most delightful time!!!We will certainly be back to Paris & Company!!”

“Amazing food prepared fresh and served with a smile! Nina and her staff are so friendly and take great pride in the food they serve. I have had the croque monsieur, quiche, southern macaroni salad (to die for), grilled cheese and tomato basil soup…all are amazing. You definitely get your money’s worth here at Paris & Company, whether you drop in for lunch or take home dinner on the fly. The venue is clean and well kept and you can watch them make your order too. Make sure to put Paris & Company on your list of must do’s and send your friends and family too, they won’t want to miss this great place!”

Desserts
Soup

“Always great food! Nina does an amazing job making fresh soups, salads, sandwiches, quiche’s and desserts. I have had the croque monsieur, quiche, garden salad with blackened chicken and southern macaroni salad. Everything is presented so nicely and with great pride. I will definitely be back. Please send your friends over to Paris & Company for lunch or dinner. Catering available too! I wish you much success!!”

“This is not take out food!! It is far beyond that! This is more like gourmet food with the ease of no fuss and no mess! Presentation is perfection. All foods are fresh and flavorful. I have tried the potato soup and the wedding soup. I have also had thelasagna and chicken & dumplings. Their salads are SOOOO fresh! The garlic ciabatta bread is addicting. What a true pleasure to eat your food PARIS & COMPANY! I will see you again this week!!!”

cheese and fruit
take-out food

“This is definitely one of the area’s best-kept secrets when it comes to great food.  If you order the lasagna, keep in mind that it’s big enough to share, easily two full portions, especially if you’re also going to have a salad, garlic bread and of course, dessert!  Speaking of dessert, you’ve got to try the chocolate brownies and then share an order of the mini-eclairs and creme puffs… delicious!  They might be a little out of the way, but your GPS will find them without a problem (mine did), not to mention that it’s a beautiful drive through farm country with all sorts of mountain views along the way.”

“WOW!!! Excellent food!!! I had the lasagna with a chef salad. I was able to get 3 meals out of the salad an my son finished off the lasagna. That’s how big the portions are. An I don’t know about anyone else but when I go out to eat that’s one of the major things I pay attention to, “portion size”. Of course, with 2 teenage boys that I’m going broke trying to feed!! You look for places that have’em…. So, YES, this place ROCKS!!! I’d give y’all 100 stars, but it only has 5…. Keep it up!!!!”

“I stopped by Paris & Company this afternoon because I was house-sitting nearby and needed something other than a frozen pot pie for my dinner tonight. I brought home their vegetable lasagna and it was some of the best I have ever eaten. Much better than the lasagna at several of our local Italian restaurants. The garlic butter they gave me to heat up on the french bread was delicious. And I topped it off with the mini cream-puffs and eclairs (get two orders of these if there’s two of you… you can easily eat the whole bunch yourself).”

“One cannot think well, love well and sleep well if one has not dined well…”

Pizza Pizza Pizza! Right here in Hayesville

Pizza Pizza Pizza! Right here in Hayesville we now have more choices than ever for the best pizza around, dining in or take-out.  While we’ve already talked about the Valley River Brewery and the Tusquittee Tavern, we’ve got a couple more places for you to check out when the pizza bug strikes.

Mariolino’s Italian Restaurant
One of the newest places in town is Mariolino’s Italian Restaurant.  With a large and varied menu, Mariolino’s offers something for everyone.   Mariolino’s is located just east of the Hayesville schools complex on Hwy 64-Business, right by the traffic circle east of town.  A big, family-friendly place, Mariolino’s has several different sections of dining rooms with big roomy booths, large tables for family meals and a private dining room for special events– meetings, birthday celebrations, wedding and baby showers, and more.

Angelo’s Pizzeria
Located in downtown Hayesville, right on the square and opposite the newly refurbished historic courthouse, Angelo’s Pizzeria has been the go-to place for some of the best pizza anywhere in the mountains.  In addition to their great pizzas, the menu offers a large selection of pasta dishes, specialty sandwiches and salads. Angelo’s is the perfect spot to grab a pizza for dinner on Friday nights, then head on over to the gazebo on the square for some great bluegrass and country music at Hayesville’s free Friday Night Concert Series

Roma’s Pizzeria
Located in a small strip of stores just west of the Ingles and Hwy 69, Roam’s Pizzeria is a local favorite for its large and varied salad bar in addition to some of the best New York-style pizza anywhere.  As one pizza-eater said on Facebook: good thin crust pizza is hard to find (especially with my husband) but we have been very pleased with each visit. As a former waitress, I know the importance of building relationships with customers and they have gone above and beyond to keep repeat customers, learn their names and build relationships with us. I have seen such improvement since opening and we love going back. Keep up the good work!

Giovanni’s Pizzeria
Giovanni’s Pizzeria is located on Hwy 69, just about a mile south of the traffic light at Hwy 64 & Hwy 69.  Here’s what one happy customer recently wrote:
Giovanni’s is easily one of my favorite restaurants in the area! The owner grew up in Brooklyn and his family has been in the pizza business for decades – and you can tell! The pizza is delicious, fresh and not greasy.  This is a great place if you specific dietary needs, especially in an area where southern cooking has dairy, gluten, meat, etc in everything. They have a delicious, crispy, gluten-free crust that they carefully prepare away from other gluten-containing ingredients, and the pepperoni and sausage are gluten-free (I am unsure if it celiac-friendly). I have been eating it and my gluten-triggered migraines don’t make an appearance. They also have a couple of vegan cheese options. This has quickly become a favorite with my family and many of our friends. If you love pizza, Giovanni’s is the place to go!

Anejo Mexican Grill

Anejo Mexican Grill – the first stop for the best in TexMex and authentic Mexican food here in our little corner of the mountains.   When you’ve tried the local BBQ joints and have had your fill of burgers & fries, when you’ve got a hankering for a bowl of chips and salsa, maybe some guacamole and a frosty margarita, then it’s time to head on over to the friendly folks at Anejo Mexican Grill in Hayesville.

I’m convinced that anyone who doesn’t like Mexican food is a psychopath.
~Jim Gaffigan, “Mexican Foodland,” Food: A Love Story, 2014

Don’t know what to order when you’re out for Mexican food?  Worried you won’t understand the menu, or that you don’t speak Spanish?  Don’t worry – the team at this family-owned restaurant speaks English and the friendly servers are happy to explain their menu items and help you make your choice.  Can’t handle red-hot chili peppers? Then simply ask for your dish to be created “mild”.

Here’s what folks have said about their meal at Anejo Mexican Grill…

Paul C. says:  Small town surprise that rivals any authentic Mexican anywhere else in NC.  Fresh chips and salsa and a house margarita are a great opener.  Enormous menu full of old favorites and new ones. Had (and LOVED) the Quesadilla Mucho Grande.  Enough food to feed a family of 2-3 for $8.50!  Creamy cheese, marinated chicken and juicy shrimp with refried beans and amazing guacamole (creamy with a perfect kick of garlic) on the side. Great value, wonderful food, and some sweet ambiance to boot.  Highly recommended.

Brandi W. says:  This was our first time here. We came in based on others reviews and we are happy we did. The service was excellent and the food was amazing! The prices we very fair based on the portions and quality. Other reviews mentioned it didn’t look like much on the outside but it’s very nice inside. We will definitely return the next time we are in the area.

Nina S. wrote:  This place was a riot — jam packed on Sunday night at 7pm, we were seated quickly and in the middle of full-on Mexican kitsch.  I had a Texas margarita, which had some kick to it, and enchiladas rancheros…I swear I got 2 chicken breasts in those enchiladas.  The waiter was very attentive (‘cause we were beside the cash register). He brought me a hotter sauce for my enchiladas, and tried to get me to buy another drink.  The food was good- my patient hubby with the sensitive tummy got a cheese fajita.  Enjoyed our meal & the surroundings.

Valley River Brewery

flight of beers

Welcome to Valley River Brewery!
Craft Beer  –  Wine  –  Appetizers  –  Wood Fired Pizza  –  Sandwiches  – Soups  –  Salads

Valley River Brewery is one of Hayesville’s newest dining and gathering spots, offering craft beers, brick-oven pizza, soups & salads, a great selection of sandwiches—gyros, burgers, Philly cheese-steak subs, fish sandwiches– as well as a large selection of appetizers and sides. In addition to a large selection of craft-brewed beers which change daily, Valley River Brewery also offers wine by the glass and bottle. And when was the last time you had a frosty mug of old-fashioned root bee?  The Brewery makes their own with that good old-fashioned, full-bodied root beer taste as well as homemade ginger ale.

Pizza:  Valley River Brewery cooks pizza the old fashioned way in a wood-fired brick oven. Just ask anyone on the Brewery’s team– It’s the only way to cook a pizza to crispy perfection. Choose from a large selection of toppings, or choose one of the Brewery’s specialty pizzas.  The margarita pizza is a must-try, made with fresh locally-grown basil and thick, creamy mozzarella.

The Brewery is a great gathering place—the over-sized bar draws folks from all over the area and although you might enter a stranger, you’ll leave with new friends. Enjoy a rousing game of darts, watch the latest sports on the large TV, or just enjoy a chat with the folks at the bar.

Valley River Brewery

Here’s what folks on TripAdvisor have to say about their visit to Valley River Brewery…

“I really liked the laid back ambiance of this place. It reminds me of a small brewery in Atlanta. The service was really Good! Justin (server from Florida) helped us choose delicious local brews. The shrimp in our basket was fresh, fried to perfection and the hand cut fries were delish! They have the best white pizza hands down. The toppings were crispy in a good way. We will be back again!”

“Based on reviews from others, we stopped here for pizza and craft beer. Very pleased. Pizza was very tasty and came out fast. We enjoyed tasting a flight of their craft beers. We sat at their bar, about 8 seats. Casey waited on us and was very friendly and informative about the beers. We will come here  again… Excellent rating based on quality of our pizza, craft beers and a friendly local business.”

“My husband and I stopped in here for a quick bite after a long drive. The waiter was so friendly and accommodating! The food was fantastic. We ordered one of their homemade pizzas and split it. The ingredients were fresh and the meal was a great one! Would highly recommend and will go back again!”

“How can you go wrong when you can get some great micro brewed beer and some Hard Cider, you can sample any beer or cider before you order a big glass. Then you can get some awesome brick oven pizza. They do have some great burgers and wings and many other items on their menu.”

Fresh Carolina Produce!

watermelon
peaches

Fresh Carolina produce!  Sweet Carolina peaches!
Georgia might be known as the Peachtree State but some of the best peaches in the region can be found right here in North Carolina.  It’s “Produce Stand” time of year here in our little corner of the mountains and we couldn’t be more excited.  Some of the freshest fruits and vegetables to be found anywhere are being grown and harvested right along our roads and highways.  Once you try the fresh stuff, you’ll never go back to store-bought produce.

From savoring produce at the peak of freshness to meeting the people who grow your food and bumping into friends and neighbors, Clay County’s many produce stands are part of enjoying everything that’s good about small town living here in western North Carolina.

Summer is the season for long, lazy days on the lake, cookouts, gatherings of friends and neighbors and—our favorite part—farmers’ markets and produce stands. Whether it’s a roadside produce stand or a local farmers market, these vendors are the best place to go when looking for the fresh and healthy locally grown fruits and vegetables. So next time you’re on your way to the supermarket and see a roadside sign for tomatoes or eggs or melons, pull over and ask for a taste.  Our local produce stands serve up vitamin-packed taste that you won’t find at the local Ingles supermarket.

produce stand

What are some to the great things you’ll find at our local produce stands? Here’s a sampling…

Corn, the real stuff:  Picked that same morning, choose from white corn, yellow corn, bi-color corn—it’s all fresh and simply delicious.  That corn you buy at the supermarket has been siting there for so long it’s ready to be made into popcorn. The husk is dry, the silks have blackened, and it’s begging to just be tossed right out on the compost pile. The only corn worth eating in summertime is the real stuff that you’ll find at our roadside produce stands and farmers markets.

Tomatoes: Store-bought tomatoes aren’t even in the same league as farm-raised varieties found at roadside produce stands. Ripe, right-off-the-vine Roma, beefsteak, or grape tomatoes are a tasty summer treat, so grab a couple slices of white bread and the mayonnaise jar and make yourself a ‘mater sandwich.  Tomatoes are rich in vitamin C and lycopene so in addition to the juice running down your chin, they’re pumping nutrients into your operating system to keep you going all summer long.

Eggs:  Free-range versus industrial farms — The jury is still out as to whether or not free-range eggs taste better than store-bought ones, but there is one thing that’s shown to be true: they’re healthier. Eggs fresh from the farm contain less cholesterol and saturated fat, but more vitamins A, E, and D, along with omega-3 fatty acids and beta carotene.
“A hen is only an egg’s way of making another egg.”

honey for sale

Honey:  If you’ve never had fresh honey, get in your car and go find yourself a jar of locally produced honey.  Fresh local honey is both healthy and delicious, and many beekeepers now combine their honey with dozens of different flavors, giving your taste buds a delicious treat.  Thought to help avoid seasonal allergies, local honey comes from bees that have been pollinating local flora which many believe provides an increased tolerance to the pollens found in a given area.

Berries of all kinds: If you’ve never sampled a strawberry grown right here in the mountains, then you’re missing out on one of life’s sweetest moments. One bite of a plump, just-picked berry from the fields and you’ll never eat another store-bought one again.  The long summer days of ripening in the sunshine come bursting through the minute you pop them in your mouth, and along with that sunshine comes vitamins, anti-oxidants and other healthy helpers.

There’s a new dog in town—Black Dog Tavern Grill & Spirits

Black Dog Tavern

There’s a new dog in town—Black Dog Tavern Grill & Spirits!  If you’ve visited Hayesville in years past, you’ll know that the local dining scene has been a bit sparse. Well, we’re happy to say that things have changed, and all for the better.  Opened earlier this spring, Black Dog Tavern Grill has become Hayesville’s premier sports bar, the place to drop in and watch your favorite sporting event, have a cold drink and enjoy some of the best burgers, salads, wings and tacos in town.  Open for lunch or dinner, with specials every day, you’re sure to please everyone with the menu selections and hand-crafted brews and specialty drinks that are served up at Black Dog.  And their open-air dining porch is fast becoming one of the hottest places in town to see and be seen.

Here’s what Rachel D. recently said:  Parking wasn’t too bad, the place was clean & had a good atmosphere about it. The food was perfect – best wings around. And the staff was very pleasant. I’m looking forward to next time.

And what Jeanne S. had to say:  Black Dog is the place to be!!! THANK YOU Nancy and Wayne! It’s so nice to have a place to go where the staff is on point and the food is wonderful and the drink prices are beyond reasonable. We went on the opening night and many times since. Always a good time. See you soon guys

Joe H. also had a good time and a great meal: Black Dog rocks I’m having the chips and salsa, excellent. Burger coming up.

Dana H. enjoyed her meal too: Great fun! Great food! The atmosphere is welcoming! It’s a place you’ll want to check out and come back again and again!

Deena W. loved her burger: Had a great cheeseburger and home made chips for lunch! Also the Strawberry Margarita in honor of Cinco de Mayo was delicious. I hope they keep this on the menu. It was so refreshing. Atmosphere was great. Fun place to have lunch. Service was quick and friendly! Will definitely be back! Glad to have a new restaurant in Hayesville.

And Alyse W. is so glad Black Dog came to town: Great location, great food, great atmosphere, great prices! Love this place! It’s a great addition to our town.

Enrico’s Italian Restaurant

spaghetti dinner

Enrico’s Italian Restaurant is a taste of Italy in the mountains for sure!  One of our favorite local dining spots, Enrico’s is a casual, family dining experience located in nearby Young Harris, GA.  Enrico’s large menu has something for everyone and will make everyone from the kids to grandma happy.  Whatever you do, don’t skip ordering a basket of their famous garlic rolls– they are garlic rolls like you’ve never had before. And be sure to save room for dessert – our all-time favorite is their incredible tiramisu, with a creamy cappuccino to accompany it.  All of their food is cooked to order and is very reasonably priced,  offering daily house specials and other customer favorites.  Whether you choose one of their hand-cut steaks, fresh seafood entrées, or authentic Italian cuisine dishes, Enrico’s Italian Restaurant is a wonderful experience.

They are just down the road from the intersection of Hwy 69 and Hwy 76 on the way to Young Harris.  It’s a 15-20 minute drive from Casa On The Creek, but well worth the time.  And if you are celebrating a special birthday, anniversary or other event, be sure to let them know and they will gladly make your occasion a memorable dining experience

Dining At It’s Finest-The Copper Door

Dining The Copper Door
Dining at its finest…right here in our little corner of the mountains.  The Copper Door is our go-to spot for some of the finest dining you’ll find anywhere in western North Carolina or even the entire state.  Chef Dennis Barber has created a team of super-talented individuals who share his passion for the very best in food, wine and dining.  Having grown-up in New Orleans, a town renowned for foodie culture both traditional and contemporary, Dennis was influenced by experiences he had in college when a grand historic old home was converted into a fine dining restaurant. He loved the charm, ambiance and unique dining experience that this restaurant brought to his college town and from there developed a passion for good food and great wine. Fast-forward to 2005—Dennis and his team are hard at work renovating an old service station just off the town square here in Hayesville and two years later The Copper Door opened to the delight of local residents and visitors alike.  Chef Dennis created the only fine dining restaurant in the region.  His menus are created around the freshest local ingredients and are presented by some of the highest caliber staff to be found anywhere in the country.  The Copper Door offers guests a warm inviting dining room, a romantic garden patio and courtyard, and a full bar.  Foodies from all over the Southeast and beyond find their way to The Copper Door for Chef Dennis’s cooking classes, wine-pairing dinners and catering for special events.  Indeed, many of the reviews submitted by patrons who have experienced a meal at The Copper Door comment not only on the exceptional food and wine they enjoyed, but also make a point of mentioning the skill, knowledge and friendliness of Dennis’s team.  Here’s an example: This restaurant gave us one of the best dining experiences we’ve had in quite a while. We like to eat well (and don’t mind paying for a really good meal) and this place gave us everything we’d hope for. Our sever, Steven, was friendly, knowledgeable and very professional. The three of us had different appetizers and all were delicious, but my Shrimp Kristine was the best. Can we discuss those popovers? Two baskets were devoured with great joy. Our rib eye steaks were done to perfection as was the prime rib. Desserts were outstanding but the choice for “best” was difficult – bread pudding or Creme Suzanne, tough call! They also pour a good cocktail here. We’d go back in a heartbeat! Best Trout Anywhere!

trout dinner

You haven’t had real southern cooking until you’ve tasted some of the local specialties at Mary’s Southern Grill.  Our younger guests have raved about the pancakes and locals say that Mary’s serves up some of the best fresh trout to be had anywhere here in our little corner of the mountains.

Here’s what one recent diner had to say:  “A friend recommended Mary’s Southern Grill to us for some of the best local, Southern food around.  We tried it, then we went back two more times and it was just as good each time. The atmosphere would best be described as plaid shirts worn mostly by people North of 50/55. The staff never stops running and never stops smiling. You can count on Mary stopping by your table to say hello.”

Mary’s Southern Grill is located in the Tower Place  Shopping Center at 1615 State Hwy 17 in Young Harris, just north of the intersection of Hwy 17/69 and Hwy 76.  Phone: 706-896-1046
Note – Mary’s Southern Grill is cash or check only, but there’s an ATM onsite if you need it.
